Dental Insurance - Everything You Should Know About Dental FillingsVisiting your family dentist for fillings are one of the most common dental appointments people make. Yet many are unclear as to what fillings actually are, and whether insurance covers them. If you want to learn more about both, then read on!

What Are Dental Fillings

We’ve all been there. When you visit your dentist for a regular checkup, he or she will examine your teeth and take a few x-rays to check for internal decay or damage. If you wind up with a cavity (as is common from a sugar-filled diet) or if a tooth is cracked, a dental filling may be used to salvage the tooth.

There are several materials used for fillings.

  • Composite – Composite dental fillings are one of the most popular due to their coloring, which is designed to match that of your regular teeth. These fillings bond to the tooth and are most often used for broken or chipped teeth.
  • Amalgam – An amalgam filling has been used for dental fillings far longer than even composite. The material is strong and durable, lasting longer than composite. However, the silver coloring may throw some people off.
  • Ceramic – A ceramic filling is a type of porcelain that matches the color of your teeth. The material is resistant to staining but is often more expensive.

Does Insurance Cover Dental Fillings?

Typically, yes, your dental insurance will cover regular checkups, cleanings twice per year, and cavity fillings. However, there are some policies that consider fillings to be a specialized service. As such, it’s not always covered. You’ll want to check your specific policy to determine what, if any, of the expenses involved are covered.
